If that’s the case or even if you just want to get rid of some of the excess, consider donating the unwanted goodies to charity. You may donate candy by dropping it off at school next Monday. There will be signs and a labeled tub at the front of the school and in the office until Wednesday, November 9th. Thank you.

This program has replaced California Distinguished School as a state recognition program. Our “Signature Practice” that we highlighted in our application is our Innovative Program: Math, Science, Technology with the integration of Music. We are proud of our teachers, our students and our larger community for their support of our school.

🍲 Waste Free Lunch
On April 4th we began Earth month as part of our Life Science investigations. Our school wide focus question for the week has been "What is a waste free lunch, and why is it important to know?" Students have been analyzing lunch time waste and the proper bin placement of waste, playing a green "Clean Up" board game, and our older 4th and 5th grade students are watching a documentary film about the Pacific Garbage Patch entitled, Plastic Paradise. We have all been shocked to find out how pervasive plastic has become in our bay and in our beautiful ocean. We are asking our families to take time to reflect on what is being packed in our kiddos lunches, and to try and eliminate items that have single use plastic packaging. Even if the plastic items are recyclable and placed in the blue bins, we are finding that only a small portion of these plastics actually do get recycled. Many end up in land fills or are carried by wind into our waterways. Over 50% of our students already use reusable drink bottles and reusable containers, and this effort greatly reduces the amount of waste we generate. We would like to increase reusable drink bottle usage to 100% [teachers and staff too]!
I am a parent who packs a lunch for two AUSD students each morning as well, so I know how complicated [and frankly, stressful] this issue can be. But when I think about the health of our environment [and my family's love of sushi], I think the effort in eliminating as much single-use plastic from our lives as possible is well worth it. Please join us in our challenge to make the planet and ourselves healthier. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me via email. I am open to conversation. Thank you for sharing your lovely children with us.
- Ms. Nettles

The California Education Code Section 60615 states that parents/guardians may annually submit a written request to the principal of their student's school if they do not wish to have their student take any or all tests. If a parent or guardian submits an exemption request after testing has begun, any test[s] completed before the request is submitted will be scored and the results reported to the parent or guardian and included in the pupil’s records. AUSD teachers and schools support students to do well on the tests and help them learn test-taking skills that will enable them to be successful throughout their school career and beyond. We encourage parents to contact their child's teacher or principal with any concerns they may have about the test before they request that their student be excluded from taking the test[s].
Music & Astronomy Night
Astronomers from the East Bay Astronomical Society will be setting up their scopes on the Earhart asphalt. The evening also features an OUT OF THIS WORLD performance by the faculty and resident teaching artists of Alameda String Academy. The concert will begin at 7:30PM, approximately 30 minutes before sunset and sky gazing will continue until 10:30PM. Bay Farm Elementary, Otis Elementary, Edison Elementary, and Haight Elementary families are also invited to this community event. All students must be accompanied by parents, and the playground is not open during the evening. This is a late, dark event, but well worth the effort!

A Message from Kate Schnoebelen, PTA President
A HUGE thank you to A Sound Explosion crew, Earhart PTA volunteers, and middle & high school volunteers! The countless hours you dedicated to pulling together a fun evening for the Earhart community is much appreciated.
I enjoyed working with each of you and learned a lot! Since this type of community event was new to all of us at Earhart, I think it is very important to reflect on our experience in order to plan for the future. Our PTA would love to hear more from Earhart families about the types of events in which you are interested in attending. Please click here for the survey that will help you give feedback quickly and easily. I encourage you to fill out it and let your voice be heard whether or not you attended the dance. I also encourage you to contact me directly if you have ideas for new events. Again, please take the time to fill out the four-question survey below, so that we can move forward with a clear understanding of what families at our school find interesting. Thank you!
Students in third grade will be participating in the annual GATE [Gifted And Talented Education] assessment during the month of February. Students will be assessed over a three-day period using the CogAT 7 [Cognitive Abilities Test]. Students are not encouraged to study for the CogAT. This tool simply measures how students think logically, not what they have learned in school. If you would like to learn more about GATE or opting out of this assessment, please contact Principal Dean.
🎥 Movie Night - Minions
There will be free popcorn and water. Please bring a blanket to sit and enjoy the show. This is a family event, children must be accompanied by an adult. Hope to see you all there!
The Teacher of the Year Program
The program is designed to honor and recognize excellent teachers working in the Alameda Unified School District [AUSD]. This is a unique opportunity to provide well deserved recognition for the whole teaching profession, as well as for the distinguished teachers that are nominated. Parents, students, staff, and community members have the opportunity to nominate any pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade teacher or a teacher of adults who provide instruction in the same curriculum as those who teach in elementary or secondary grades. Forms are available in the office, and on AUSD Website.
Spirit Day Friday - Pajama Day
Yes indeed, it’s “Pajama Day” again! Please encourage your child to come to school in jammies! Remember, all attire and shoes must be "school appropriate". No slippers, please. Proper undergarments must be worn. It will be cold, so nightgowns should be paired up with pajama bottoms. Bathrobes are acceptable, in fact they make fine jacket substitutes. All participants should seek out Ms. Greden in the morning near the lunch tables between 8:10 and 8:20am to enter a raffle for prizes. Next month we will be bringing back “Crazy Hair Day” by popular demand. We had some other ideas for February’s Spirit Day, but we have had multiple requests from students and teachers alike to bring back crazy hair! Crazy Hair Day will be on Friday, February 19th.
🎨 Secret Art Sale
Frank Bette Center in Alameda invites Earhart School to participate in the Secret Art Sale taking place in January 2016. Students have the opportunity to create original art work that will be anonymously shown & sold alongside professional artists & local Alameda celebrities!
Students who would like to participate should pick up a sheet of paper from the office & create a piece of art. The children can use any medium they would like & can even make a 3D piece. All art must be on 5x7 inch paper & must only be signed on the back of each piece. Once all of the art is collected the children’s creations will be displayed at the Frank Bette Center along with the art of well-known artists & celebrities at the end of January. The Alameda community, including all of us, is then welcome to purchase any piece of art. You may end up with an original piece from a famous artist or a masterpiece from an Alameda student. All proceeds will be split between the Frank Bette Center & Earhart School. This is a perfect project to work on over winter break!
🎅 Holiday Hat Day
Dedication of Amelia Earhart Statue
"...Dream big and accomplish big things."
We have gathered in our parking lot in a celebration to dedicate the statue of Amelia Earhart that has been donated to our school.
"Amelia Earhart would have thought the crisp air and cloudless sky over Bay Farm Island on Tuesday made for perfect flying weather. But the students at Amelia Earhart Elementary School would have told her the conditions were just as good for an assembly to dedicate a statue of the pioneering aviator...'Just as Amelia had oceans to fly, you too will have oceans to fly,' Principal Joy Dean told the students, who sang songs, recited poetry and shared quotes by Earhart as parents looked on and snapped photos."

🎃 Teal Pumpkin Project™
Make trick-or-treating a breeze this year by joining the Teal Pumpkin Project™ and offer safe, non-food alternatives. Trick-or-treating can be stressful for those with food allergies, gluten intolerances, sugar insensitivities and other food intolerances.
The Teal Pumpkin Project™ is a new tradition to raise awareness for those with food sensitivities. There are lots of ways you can participate, such as offering non-food items like erasers, slinkies, stickers, stencils, spider rings, mini notepads, playing cards, etc. Many items can be purchased low cost at the Dollar Tree, Target or Amazon. You can donate to Amelia Earhart School when you shop on Amazon!
Let the kids in your neighborhood know you offer safe, non-food items by painting a pumpkin teal & placing it on your doorstep. We hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween! For more information on the Teal Pumpkin Project™, please visit the Food Allergy Research & Education website.
